Where is The Borough in Pender County?

Bill Walsh

Q. A lot of times I notice thunderstorm warnings in Pender County from the National Weather Service will mention a location named The Borough. Can you tell me where it is?

A. The Borough is located in Grady Township, near Currie, approximately 8 miles south-southeast of Atkinson.

“It is off Borough Road in the Currie area. There must be some sort of weather station there,” saidPender County Director of Planning and Community Development Kyle Breuer, perhaps one of the legion of private citizens who keep an eye on the skies and share information with weather officials.

Local historian and Pender County Library Director Mick Taylor said the area now known as The Borough was originally laid out by Hardy Parker Sr. in 1798, likely a member of the same family who once owned the land where Mayfaire Town Center is located today.

“It was a dairy farm that Hardy Parker once owned,” Taylor said of that tract. “The family owned all kinds of land everywhere.”

The Borough was originally laid out as Parkersborough, then sold in 1799, and the first part of the name was dropped, Taylor said.

I’m very interested in more information. The Borough history search has been on my “to do” list. My family has owned a 250 acre farm in the center of Borough Road on Moore’s Creek since the 1990s. I recently built a new home and I am now living here. It is truly a little piece of heaven…….to me. I’ve been interested in some of the topography along the creek front. It appears to be an earthwork and an old foundation. My father told me there was once a landing in this area that would receive supplies from a riverboat.
