What is the correct pronunciation of Sanders Road?

Ben Steelman

There’s a difference of opinion. New Hanover County Planning Director Chris O’Keefe said he’s always heard it pronounced  “Sanders” to rhyme with “band.” However, Mike Whaley, longtime local history volunteer at the New Hanover County Public Library and a lifetime resident, has heard it pronounced both “Sanders” and as if it were spelled “Saunders.”

Sanders Road links U.S. 421 and River Road just north of Beau Rivage Plantation Golf Course. It appears to be named for John A. Sanders, a 19th century landowner who owned the Sanders Place farm between Wilmington and Carolina Beach.
