Can I recycle books?

The short answer is no — you cannot put books in a recycling bin. The glue that binds together the book isn’t able to be broken down in the recycling process. If the book is in poor condition, you can take apart the book and recycle the pages in a paper recycling bin. If the books are in good condition, donating the books for reuse may be another way to keep them out of landfills. Several places in the area will take donations.

New Hanover County

  • All New Hanover County Library branches accept book donations inside the building, so that they can provide a receipt of your donation. Book donation guidelines can be found here.
  • The University of North Carolina Wilmington has a similar donation procedure. The school has similar guidelines to the county library system.
  • The Cape Fear Literacy Council takes books of certain genres, so please call for more information: (910) 251-0911.

Brunswick County

  • Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity offers three ReStore locations where book donations are accepted — Ocean Isle Beach, Southport and Leland
  • Friends of the Leland Library, 114 Town Hall Drive, accept books for fundraising events.

Pender County

  • Both the Burgaw and Hampstead Branches of the Pender County Library accept book donations at their branches or via mail. Be sure to grab a donation form to put with your books as well.
