To which organizations in this area can I give a tax-free donation?

The IRS maintains a searchable list of organizations eligible to recieve tax-deductible donations. You can search by name or location here: https://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Organizations-Eligible-to-Receive-Tax-Deductible-Charitable-Contributions

The organizations in the Cape Fear region that qualify for tax-deductible donations are diverse and include religious organizations, service groups, foundations, arts groups and public health providers. Some organizations, like the United Way of the Cape Fear Area and the Landfall Foundation, research and support the work of other nonprofit groups.

The StarNews regularly writes about local nonprofits in its Living Local section (Wednesdays in the print edition and online at http://www.starnewsonline.com/livinglocal).

How can you know when you donate to a nonprofit that the money will be used effectively? Clues can be found in the organization’s financial documents. Learn more here: http://www.starnewsonline.com/article/20160115/NEWS/160119755/
