Can you target shoot with pistols on the spoil islands behind Masonboro Island?

Tim Hower

The short answer is no. According to Hope Sutton, the stewardship coordinator and southern sites manager for the N.C. Coastal Reserve, the rules of the Coastal Reserve prohibit target shooting anywhere within the boundaries.

Sutton went on to say, “I know of no situations in which a private land owner gave permission for target shooting. There is very limited privately held property on the dredge spoil islands, with the vast majority being in state ownership and the Army Corps holding an easement across much of that area. We have had several situations in the past few years in which we have worked closely with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to address target shooting on those islands, and we have posted signs on several to try to get the message across that this activity is not allowed in this location.”
