Where in Wilmington can one get CPR training?

Paul Stephen

A 2014 New England Journal of Medicine study showed nearly 95 percent of cardiac arrest victims — roughly 900 people per day — die before they can receive treatment in a hospital. Since most of these cases (90 percent) occur at home, a nearby friend or family member trained to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can have a dramatic impact on survival rates.

In the Wilmington area, CPR classes for individuals are available through New Hanover Regional Medical Center, which teaches a hands-only technique that focuses on chest compressions and foregoes mouth-to-mouth techniques. For more information, contact EMS Education Coordinator Steven Howell at 910-667-8685 or by email at ems.outreach@nhrmc.org.

The American Red Cross also offers a wide range of CPR classes for both adult and pediatric care. Courses run roughly $90-110, and sessions are held multiple times per month. Click here for the complete schedule.

Classes are also periodically available at the Wilmington Family YMCA. View their complete calendar of health and fitness training options at https://www.wilmingtonfamilyymca.org/programs/healthy-living/health-and-fitness
