Where is WILM’s new TV tower?

Hunter Ingram

Q. Where is the new broadcast tower for CBS 10 WILM located and what areas will it serve? Is the power as strong as the current tower in Delco?  (I am referring to WILT Channel 24 which is rebroadcasting the WILM signals?

A. Earlier this year, CBS 10 WILM flipped the switch on a new translator (not another tower) in Funston, N.C., which takes the local broadcast signal that airs on channel 10 and coverts it to channel 24 for rebroadcast.

Matt Brandes, transmitter supervisor for WILM’s parent company Capital Broadcasting Company, said the goal of the translator is to better serve areas like Monkey Junction, Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach.

While the translator is meant to send a signal that reaches Southport and Oak Island, Brandes said another tower out of Charleston can provide some interference for customers.

The low-power translator, per FCC regulations, is only 15 kilowatts, the same as WILM’s main tower in Delco.

He said WILM continues to do research on better ways to strengthen the signal for customers.

In the meantime, Brandes suggests that customers in those areas buy a directional antenna, which, when pointed to the Funston/Winnabow area, can help pick up the local signal.

Why is WILM TV’s over-the-air digital signal so affected by the weather?

Which digital TV channels are available locally over the air?
