How do I get rid of an old couch if I live in New Hanover County?

There are a few options in New Hanover County for getting rid of a couch, depending on its condition and whether you’re looking to dump or donate it.

To donate:

The Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity ReStore both offer a free pick-up service. You can call and arrange a time for them to take your couch off your hands.

The Salvation Army: 910-762-6611

ReStore: 910-686-9800

To dump:

If you live within the city limits, call 341-7875 to schedule a bulky-item pick-up. The city will let you know which day to have it out and where to set it. You need to make a pick-up request before 5 p.m. the day before your normal trash collection day. There’s no added fee for that service.

If you live outside of the city limits, the first step is to call your trash provider and see if you can schedule a pickup. There may be a fee associated with that, said environmental management director Joe Suleyman.

Here are the numbers for the three largest trash provider franchise holders in New Hanover:

Waste Management: 910-799-5256

Waste Industries: 910-762-7563

Pink Trash: 910-313-2556

You can also always bring it to the New Hanover County landfill, which is located at 5210 U.S. 421 North. The landfill is open 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 6:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

If you have further questions about disposal, you can call the county landfill at 910-798-4450.

Is it against the law to pick through and take from other people’s curbside recycling and trash bins?

How do they keep trash cans at beaches from washing out to sea during high tide?
