Q. On a telephone phone near the railroad tracks on South Front Street, there is a blue box with a black circle on it. Do you have any idea what it is?

A. It appears to be a plywood box painted blue and containing a speaker. It was attached to the pole by a rubber bungee cord.

MyReporter initially couldn’t find out how it got there until we put Don Bennett, Wilmington’s city traffic engineer, on the case. Bennett consulted with a fellow city employee, R.T. Jones, and they came up with the answer:

The box was part of the PPD Beach 2 Battleship triathlon event held on Oct. 17. The boxes were used to play music for the participants.

The blue box on South Front Street has since been removed.

A while back I asked about the green stickers on some telegraph poles or trees or gates in Forest Hills area (and maybe other areas) of Wilmington. This reason for this is still listed as “unknown”.

Possibly, I think, maybe, the green stickers could be attached by the people who bring our papers along at 4 or 5 o’clock each morning. The stickers could make it easier to tell who has subscribed to the Star News.

Ha! You are correct. It never occurred to the reporter who originally investigated the issue to ask our own people. I’ve updated the answer, and thanks.
