Is there any place locally that I can turn in glass bottles for money?

Unfortunately no. Glass is one of the lowest valued recyclable items, said Lynn Bestul, New Hanover County’s solid waste planner. New Hanover County and Wilmington City’s recycling services will both take glass off your hands free of charge, but they nor any locally owned private company offer money for glass.

The New Hanover County landfill actually hauls off 20 tons of glass at a time to a company in Raleigh in exchange for just $4 a ton, which is barely enough to cover gas there and back. This is done not for the money but rather to relieve our area of the glass.

“Our objective is to keep as much waste out of our landfill as possible to extend the life of the landfill,” said Bestul.

If by chance you have any aluminum cans or other metals, you can turn those in for money.

Where is the city’s recycling sorted and what does it cost?

Why does recycling service cost extra and is not included with trash service in New Hanover County?
