Are there any plans to fly Korean War veterans to Washington to visit the Korean War Memorial?

Si Cantwell

It appears not, at least from Southeastern North Carolina.

The Korean War Memorial in Washington honors the veterans who fought in the Korean War, from 1950 to 1953.

Staffers at the National Park Service office that oversees the memorial were unaware of any plans to fly veterans there for visits.

Larry C. Kinard, of Mansfield, Texas, is president of the Korean War Veterans Association.

He says the operators of Honor Flights in Texas are starting to carry Korean War veterans on the flights, which were created to fly World War II veterans to see the National World War II Memorial and other sights in the nation’s capital.

He said those flights are continuing in his state.

But the last Honor Flight from Wilmington flew in April 2011, and none have operated since then. The Wilmington-to-Washington flights began April 13, 2010.

The StarNews is unaware of any plans to restart the flights, and our efforts to reach the original organizers of Honor Flight of SENC were unsuccessful.
