Where is a good place to go crabbing on Oak Island? Is there a season for that?

There isn’t a designated season for crabbing, but there is a 5-inch minimum size limit for males and immature females, according to the N.C. Department of Natural Resources.

From Sept. 1 to April 30, there is a 6 ¾-inch maximum size limit for females. You can only take 50 crabs per day per person, and you are not to exceed 100 crabs per vessel per day.

The size limit is measured from tip-to-tip of the carapace.

On Oak Island, the town has plenty of waterway access points good for crabbing. Two prime ones are Heron Lookout, Southeast 40th Street at Davis Creek, and 78th Street Crab Dock, Northeast 78th Street at East Yacht Drive. All of the town’s park facilities can be viewed on the town’s website: www.oakislandnc.com/Departments/Parks-Recreation/Town-Parks.aspx.
