Q. Why are there no bicycle racks at Legion Stadium anywhere? There are none at the pool there, either. I live about six blocks from there and wanted to go see a football game. Who would I have to talk to go get something done about this?

A. Bike racks were not identified as a priority when Legion Stadium was renovated in 2000, and public demand has yet to change that stance, according to Amy Beatty, the city’s superintendent of recreation and downtown services.

The stretch of Carolina Beach Road that runs in front of Legion doesn’t include bike lanes, which makes biking to games and events there impractical for most.

Beatty said in 15 years with her department this is the first time she’s heard anyone ask about bike racks, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t be added at the stadium.

“We don’t currently have any funding allocated for bike racks out there,” Beatty said, “but certainly if there was demand, it would be put on a priority list, and we’d look at installing them in the future.”

Until then, Beatty said Legion Stadium users are welcome to lock up their bikes to the fencing around the stadium, provided they are careful not to cause any damage.

To voice concern, Beatty advises calling her office at 910-341-7855 or commenting on the department’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/wilmingtonrecreation.

Bikers can find more info about how to lobby for future projects like this through the city’s planning websites, www.createwilmington.com and www.wmpo.org.

When was Legion Stadium built and how was it financed?

Do you know what the Hammerheads and Sharks pay the City to rent Legion Stadium?

Thank you for your answer. What exactly do these folks consider public demand? I don’t have money to contribute to someones campaign chest and neither do most of the other people in this area of town. Is that what public demand is considered to consist of in this town? Paying someone off? Nothing else seems to work.

I’m disabled and have to use a wheelchair, mobility scooter or 3 wheel trike to get around an I can’t afford a car even if I wanted one. I already know from ten+ years of wasted effort that calling the city asking to get small things done like a wheelchair ramp cut in a street curb (that the law already requires) has no effect at all.

I’ve talked to other people living around here about this and I’m not the only one that would like to be able to ride a bike there. I wonder just how much ticket money has been lost due to that. I bet it’s much more than a couple of bike racks would have cost to have been installed.

True, there are no bike lanes there but then there are no bike lanes anywhere on Carolina Beach Rd. Nor are there any other bike racks at any of the business’s along it either other than the KFC restaurant and I see that one getting used quite often. There are a lot of the poorer people in this area that use a bike as their main transportation. No bike lanes doesn’t mean people riding bikes don’t use the road anyway. We do have the same right to use it as cars and trucks do regardless of what some car drivers around here seem to think. A bike lane would be nice to have but it isn’t required.

I thought the suggestion that you could lock your bike to the fence was helpful.

I was told I couldn’t lock it up there. Somebody needs to get their info straight on that suggestion.
