What was the name of the nightclub at the Ramada Inn on Market St. in the 1980’s?

Gail Calloway

Wilmington had its own disco mecca in the 1980s. In 1981, the Ramada Inn at 5001 Market St. opened Banana’s Disco Lounge. Mirror balls, pulsating lights, music turned customers into disco partiers. In addition to guests staying in the inn, locals soon began wearing the platform shoes, polyester suits and getting into the dancing styles seen in as such movies as Saturday Night Fever, Can’t Stop the Music and many more. The club was discoing from 1981 until 1986, and then as the styles started changing, Banana’s changed into the more laid back Banana’s Lounge. Big change.

Another transition came in 1987 when the space became Harvey’s Restaurant and Lounge. Harvey’s hung on until 1991, and since has been a wide array of establishments, changing with the times and the managements.

Where are the dance clubs?

Are there any Irish dance schools in Wilmington?
