When did the old Biltmore Dairy Bar close?

Gail Calloway

Q. When did the old Biltmore Dairy Bar close?

A. When you walked into the Biltmore Dairy Bar at 853 S. 17th St., it was a true awakening of all the senses. The coolness after being out in the warm Wilmington weather, the fresh sweet smells, and the wonderful photo mural of the cows grazing at the Biltmore’s mountain farm. It was heaven even before you got your ice cream.

It opened in 1956 in the Hughes Brother’s Shopping Center a17th and Dawson Streets. The A&P store was in the same shopping center and across the street was a Sunoco Service station and Piggly Wiggly.

Going to the Biltmore Dairy Bar was a treat for all ages. Many pediatricians gave coupons to their patients for free cones. Thick creamy milkshakes, the best banana splits — everything was good. The “Pig’s Trough” was a real challenge. Served in a wooden bowl is was so large and contained so many flavors and toppings, that those who finished were awarded a wooden achievement badge.

The Dairy Bar opened in 1956 and closed in 1967. Chris’s Restaurant now occupies the location.

Did the Biltmore Dairy Bar give rewards to customers who could eat all of a huge dessert?

Does anybody remember Shields’ ice cream parlor?

Was there ever a Dairy Queen at Carolina Beach? And if so, where?
