Who was Olympian Adam Smith of Wilmington?

Powell Latimer

Adam Smith, from his passport photo. Ancestry.com.

Q. During the late 1960s, I became acquainted with former Olympian Adam Smith (swimmer). He resided at 4916 Oleander Drive and was retired from the Wilmington YMCA. Once on a visit to his home, he showed me his medals. Can the Star-News do a story on Mr. Smith’s 1924 Summer Olympic involvement?

A. Here’s what MyReporter was able to find out:

Adam Wyman Smith was an Olympic swimmer at the 1924 Paris games representing the United States. According to North Carolina death records and sports-reference.com, Smith was born Dec. 28, 1903, in Bradford, Pa., and later moved to Wilmington, where he died April 8, 1985.

Smith swam the 1,500 meter freestyle in the 1924 games, but did not win a medal or make the championship heat of the event. Smith finished fourth in his semifinal heat with a time of 22:39.8.

It’s unclear when or why Smith moved to Wilmington, but he did spend at least the last years of his life here.

Has the Wilmington area ever produced any Olympians?

Are there any curling clubs around here?

You got the wrong person. Adam Smith was from Erie, PA. He came in 5th in the 100 yard backstroke at the 1924 Olympics. The photo you have is of William Henry Robertson Jr. from Pittsburgh. The second page of his (William Robertson Jr.) passport with his photo is on the left side of the scanned page (on Ancestry.com) and the right side is the first page of Adam Smith of Erie, PA. I’m writing a story about Adam Smith on our history site in Erie and came across your post.

Would you email me a photo of the right Adam Smith? You can send it to: Si.Cantwell@starnewsonline.com. Let me know how you would like for me to credit the photo.
