Q. I am looking some information or history on the UNCW club football team. Do they still play? I started as quarterback and served as the club president in 1987. Terry Schappert was my starting wide receiver.

A. According to UNCW athletic communications chief Joe Browning, the UNCW club football team was established in 1977-78 and competed in the North Carolina Club Football Association (NCCFA). During its inaugural season, the team posted wins over undefeated teams from Appalachian State and N.C. State. Club football continued until 1991 when the program was suspended by the Student Activities Office for failure to complete university requirements for liability releases.

UNCW Archives: Did You Know … UNCW Had a Football Club?

When will a football program be started at UNCW?

When did they change the school colors at UNCW?

I played on NCSU’s Club team from 1975 until 1980.and served as the President. We played UNCW one year for the Championship in Legion Staduim(think that was the name). It was made into a pretty big deal with a couple of thousand in attendance. ….it was even broadcast on the radio. I still have tapes from that broadcast locked away. Sorry……We won. Club football was one of tbe best experiences of my life. We played all up and down the east coast. We even played NCSU’s regular Varsity in a secret game in Carter Stadium on one of their bi weeks. Proud to say the final score was 17-12. We lost but played a Div 1 NCAA team a d held our own. We won the League Championship 4 out of the 5 years I played. Sad to say the school disbanded the team over a concern over liability.

Was on that bteam at that game that night-NCSU was a big rival and we let that game get away from us. Totally enjoyed the entire club experience. The game at Legion was a pretty big deal with the radio coverage and attendance of a few thousand fans. as a FYI -We did beat NCSU early that same year in Raleigh with an interception run back for a touchdown and a touchdown that resulted from a bad hike over the punters head and then a pass to a running back Mark Doll -it was not how our coaches drew it up!!

When you can score after a bad hike, you’re having a good game!
