What’s the status of the church opening where Wilson’s used to be (near Walmart)?

The 30,000-square-foot building at 4925 New Centre Drive, which once housed Wilson’s restaurant and entertainment complex on 4.8 acres, officially became the property of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church on April 30, 2012, when the $3.9 million transaction closed, according to New Hanover County tax records. The Rev. Terry Henry, senior pastor of the church, did not want to share any additional details.

“We don’t have to publish what we are doing to the public,” he said. “Though we serve the community and persons who live in the community attend and are members of our church, what we are doing and have plans to do is information members of our church family are made aware of.”

A quick ride by the building recently revealed a parking lot empty of anything except a lone, abandoned shopping cart and no sign of construction activity. All traces of the former Wilson’s have been removed or covered since the deal was first announced in February.

Records show New Hanover County granted the church a building permit for demolition of an interior wall and ceiling on May 14, and rules require work to start within six months for the permit to remain valid.

UPDATE, 3/10/2016: The Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church pastor, the Rev. Terry Henry, said the church still has plans to expand to the New Centre property.

Macedonia’s current home is at 3701 Princess Place Drive.
