Are there any Goodwill or Salvation Army donation boxes in the Mayfaire area? If not, why?

Chuck Carree

Neither the Goodwill nor Salvation Army have donation boxes in New Hanover County. Both organizations used to, but found out they were too much trouble because most were owned by other companies, which would sometimes shipped the donations overseas or resale for profit without permission.

As Major Richard Watts, the commanding officer for the Salvation Army in Wilmington, pointed out they sometimes found dead animals and homelessness people sleeping in the boxes.

Steve Snyderman, the director for Goodwill Industries in Eastern Carolina, which includes Wilmington, said they have no future plans to reinstall donation boxes in the region.

Major Watts , who took over in Wilmington two years ago, indicated the Salvation Army is considering reinstating the donation boxes in Wilmington in the future, perhaps as soon as three months from now. If it happens, he thinks one would be put in at Mayfaire Town Center.

Are there organizations who will send a a truck to the Hampstead area to pick up furniture donations?

Where can I donate used clothing?

Where can I go to adopt a local family for the holidays? What charities are participating in this?

I wish the Salvation Army had the funds to have nicer, bigger donation centers like Goodwill does. I know they would recieve more donations. Goodwills prices are way too high on many items. Salvation Armys prices are what they should be for donated items. They also do more to help people. Goodwill is all about making money for the owners. Salvation Army doesn’t have money because they spend all of it on the people they help.
