What renovations are being done to the UNCW Student Rec center, and when will it reopen?

Chuck Carree

This is the response from the University of North Carolina Wilmington to the question:

“UNCW is in the midst of a major expansion and renovation project for its Student Recreation Center. Construction is underway for a new wing of the building that will roughly double the size of the existing facility and add a recreational pool. Completion of the entire project is scheduled for fall 2012.

“The Student Recreation Center was closed during summer 2011 to make improvements to the life safety systems and infrastructure of the existing building, which is 10 years old, in order to match the technology that will be installed in the new wing. These improvements included upgrades to fire alarms and sprinklers, HVAC systems and electrical code improvements.

“In addition, the closure of the building also provided the opportunity to undertake cosmetic improvements, including fresh paint, new carpet and flooring, and improved lighting. The laundry room was also expanded.

“The Student Recreation Center reopened Sunday, Aug. 29, 2011, after these improvements were completed. The Student Recreation Center expansion and renovation project is being funded through student fees.
