Why did New Hanover County Schools buy dozens of iPads for district office staff?

This is the answer submitted by Valita Quattlebaum, chief communications officer for New Hanover County Schools:

“Some district administrators received a group discount on the purchase of iPads as part of the technology-focused, paperless initiative launched by the new superintendent. The district’s goal is to increase efficiency and ultimately save thousands of dollars on paper, ink cartridges and other related items in the future. The administrators had outdated computers and some did not have laptops that could be taken to meetings. Additionally, as technology continuously advances, district administrators have to be knowledgeable and equipped to demonstrate 21st century technology to students as they are using high-tech devices such as smart phones, iPads, Nooks, notebooks and other examples of the latest technology in the classroom. Finally, most of the equipment has been purchased with money from supplies budgets which can only be used for that purpose.”

    It would be like letting your family starve because you “can’t” use money you set aside for clothes.

    The comment about funds had to be used for purchases such as the iPads may seem bizarre, but those a requirements the federal government puts on any kind of grant. If they got audited and used any monies other thna as prescribed even if it means laying people off, then they risk losing the grants and may even be required to repay the previous grants.

    Why do the parents have to pay taxes to run the school system and such, and then turn around and supply every other student with pencils, paper etc?

    I could really use a laptop to run my business, but I cannot afford one, and therefor I do not buy one.

    All of the cuts to education made in the state budget, but they can still afford to buy all of this stuff?

    No wonder why our state and nation are in such terrible financial shape…

Counselors, admin, other people who don’t even get paid by NHCS. The mind reels. Haven’t seen a teacher, the people who are ACTUALLY IN THE CLASSROOMS, with one yet.

    Not sure how getting $20 off each iPad was such a great deal – they are expensive. Laptops would have been much cheaper. Oh, wait…some schools don’t have wireless capability, but we are spending money on iPads for admin? Oh, my.

    And this is a different answer than the one our new super gave us. Get your story straight, NHCS. Maybe you can use your new iPads to communicate more efficiently.

    Why iPads? Laptops are more practical for office/educational work. In order to type on an iPad, you have to buy an accessory. It’s just a glorified iTouch or iPod, virtually useless without the internet. Another waste of money by our school system. Anybody sick of this yet?
