For whom was Grathwol Drive named?

Ben Steelman

According to Nancy Wilcox of Welcome Center LLC, the New Hanover County street was named for William Hawley Grathwol (1931-2002), a local contractor and developer, and a past president of the Homebuilders Association.

Grathwol built most of the houses in that neighborhood, just off North Kerr Avenue near the Wilmington International Airport. He seems to have used family names for some of the streets. Deborah Court and Robin Dale Court, both off of Grathwol Drive, are apparently named for Grathwol’s two daughters.
