Who do I call to report a dog running loose or barking all night?

Jim Ware

Dogs running loose are considered nuisances in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties.

To report a dog running loose, contact your local animal control or animal services office:

New Hanover County Animal Control: (910) 798-7500.

Brunswick County Animal Services: (910) 754-8204.

Pender County Animal Control: (910) 259-1349.

Barking dogs are another matter.

New Hanover County’s zoning ordinance only references dogs and noise when discussing kennel requirements. The county’s code enforcement office refers noise complaints to the sheriff’s office at (910) 798-4200 and animal complaints to animal control at (910) 798-6500.

In Brunswick County, there is no ordinance that covers barking dogs. However, complaints to animal services — (910) 754-8204 — may result in a check on the condition of the dog.

In Pender County, barking dogs are not covered under the noise ordinance. According to the county website, “The Pender County Noise Ordinance is limited to amplified music that is detrimental to or interferes with life, health or comfort of a reasonable person.” Complaints about barking dogs are referred to animal control at (910) 259-1349.

I don’t have a dog but I do have a cat and he is my mate. He is energetic, independent, sassy, cuddly and much more. He is my reason behind getting out of bed everyday. He does not have a nasty navicular in his body however he and I are vilified by other folks where I live. I am so protective of him it seems like he is the child I in no way had.He and I actually have brief chats and I swear he is aware what I am telling. He is thrilled to come home to.
