What are the words to the New Hanover High School song?

Ben Steelman

According to New Hanover High School‘s former choral director, Johannes Bron, the lyrics go like this:

“1. To thee we sing our praises, dear New Hanover High.

“With pride we sing your glory. our fame will never die.

“We’ll keep your colors flying  and give our loyalty.

“Your motto we will cherish. Our strength lies in unity.

“2. While Orange and Black wave o’er us, into the winds of time

“We’ll proudly raise our voices in this, our song sublime.

“Forever we’ll remember, these walls we’ll glorify.

“The years will find us loyal to you, dear New Hanover High.”

The words and music to the song were written in the 1950s by NHHS alumnus Emerson Head. A longtime professor of music at the University of Maryland, Head was principal trumpeter for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and was one of the nation’s foremost teachers of trumpet performance. Since 2004, he has been retired to Brevard, N.C., where he performs with the Looking Glass Brass quintet.

The school song was harmonized and slightly revised by Bron in 1985.

To the comment about this not being the fight song… This is the alma mater of NHHS. I was in chorus there and had to sing it plenty of times. This is not the fight song for sporting events.
