Is Front Street between Solomon Towers and Carolina Beach Road going to be remarked?

Ken Little

Donald Bennett, Wilmington city traffic engineer, said Front Street from Queen Street to Burnett Boulevard (Carolina Beach Road) is also a designated N.C. bike route.

“When the project to resurface Front Street was being designed, consideration was given to these bike routes,” Bennett said.

Local N.C. Department of Transportation staff, city bike/pedestrian planning personnel and the N.C. Bike/Pedestrian Unit in Raleigh “collaborated to provide bike facilities where practical during the resurfacing project,” Bennett said.

So it is not likely Front Street will be remarked as it was before.

The markings on the street are a bit confusing. It might be useful to either mark the pavement or put up signs identifying the lanes as bike lanes assuming that’s what the are.

Bicycle lane symbols are part of the pavement marking plan. The contractor will likely wait until Princess Place Drive is finished, then add all of the symbols at once.

Bike lanes wider than the lanes on Market Street??? Nice to see vehicles using 2 lanes northbound!
And why is a truck route also a bike route? Who came up with that idea?

I am still wondering when the “Bike Lane” signs are going to be put up & markings put on the pavement? It seems like confusing situation the way it is now.
