What is the USS Gravely?

The U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer Gravely (DDG 107) will be commissioned in Wilmington on Nov. 20, 2010.

The ship will dock at the N.C. State Port in Wilmington from Nov. 12-22, 2010. Tours to the public will be offered Nov. 13-19, 2010. However, the free tickets have already been handed out.

The USS Gravely is named for naval officer Samuel L. Gravely Jr. He was the first African-American to command a U.S. Navy warship, the first to command a navy warship in combat, the first to be promoted to flag rank, the first to rise to the rank of vice admiral and the first to command a U.S. fleet.
