What is the story with the painted rock on the University of North Carolina Wilmington campus? Who is allowed to paint it and how often?

Ken Little

There are two “Spirit Rocks” on campus, University of North Carolina Wilmington spokeswoman Dana Fischetti said.

One is near the Student Recreation Center on Walton Drive. The other is in front of the Fisher University Union.

“These are available for UNCW organizations and individuals to share their messages. The Spirit Rock is not reservable space, so it is available on a first-come, first-served basis,” Fischetti said.

Out of courtesy, groups and individuals are asked to allow messages to remain on the rock for 24 hours before painting over them, she said.

Content is unrestricted unless messages posted “contain obscene, vulgar or libelous material,” or information that is in violation of any federal, state or local law, or comprises unauthorized solicitation.

Students differentiate between the two Spirit Rocks by calling the one near the student union the Spirit Rock and the one by the Student Recreation Center the Spirit Boulder. The latter was created in spring 2009.

Both rocks were donated to UNCW through efforts made by the Student Government Association, Fischetti said.
