What is the new food store opening on Middle Sound Loop Road?

Gareth McGrath

As far as officials know, there are no new food stores under construction or proposed for Middle Sound.

New Hanover County Planning Director Chris O’Keefe said there’s no commercially zoned property along Middle Sound Loop Road aside from the parcels at the Market Street intersection, which are already developed as a Burger King and gas station.

A future swimming club at Demarest Village could include a snack bar.

But O’Keefe said he didn’t know of any other proposal — which would first require a rezoning — to add a restaurant, convenience store or supermarket to the peninsula.

I’m guessing that the question was prompted by the activity on a parcel not far from the Burger King, where piles of sand, mulch, tree branches and other “materials” have been stored for many years. The materials have recently been cleared away and the parcel is being graded. There is a sign there now, near the road. It says: “Coming Soon – Covil Family Market” The sign includes a web address, “TheCovilFamilyMarket.com.” You go to the website and you see a description of plans for the site. I think it says they’re planning to open next spring. Maybe rezoning is in their plans? Hm?

If you would have looked into it you would have seen the sign out by the road.

Yes and if you read the website info you see it is more of a country open air market open 1 day a week for a few hours. Nothing to get all worked up about. Just a nice addition to MSL for a change.
