What happened to the Dragon Garden Restaurant?

Ken Little

The restaurant, formerly at 341 S. College Road, Unit 52, Wilmington, [Map this] is out of business. There is no information as to the whereabouts of owners Leng and Mary Ung or if they plan to open other restaurants in Wilmington.

The restaurant opened in February 1994. It closed Nov. 19, 2009, according to information on file at the New Hanover County Health Department. The restaurant was last inspected on Sept. 1, 2009. It received a relatively favorable sanitation score of 98, so apparently that was not the reason it closed, a health department employee said.

City Tax Collector Gene Meadows said that the Ungs paid a yearly privilege license fee to the city through 2008, but did not obtain a license in 2009. A city inspection of the business in early 2010 found it vacant, Meadows said. The Ungs did not inform the city they were closing, he added.

An employee of a nearby Chinese restaurant in Wilmington wasn’t sure why the Dragon Garden closed.

“We don’t know why. They just shut their doors and we never heard from them again,” the employee said.

Employees of several other restaurants in North Carolina with the Dragon Garden name claim no connection to the Wilmington restaurant.

When the dragon garden closed, there was a note on the front door stating that it was closed due to the rent not being paid and an outstanding rent due of $ 58,000.00 was owed. Everybody I know loved the restaurant.

We saw a sign on the door that said they’d been evicted and thanked all their patrons for their years of support.
