Is it legal to rake up pine needles from a public place, such as a park, and take them home to put in my yard?

Ken Little

Removing plant material such as pine straw, flowers, cones, brush or wood from the parks is prohibited, says Jim McDaniel, New Hanover County parks director.

“We try and use as much as possible that is extra for our own use and beds. We also leave a layer down for natural weed control,” McDaniel says.

“If removed completely, we’d have to spray more than we like to control the weeds,” he adds.
