Is there a place to learn fencing in the Wilmington area?

Amy Hotz

There are at least two places to learn fencing in Wilmington.

The Cape Fear Fencing Association was established in 1997. It teaches foil, epee and saber from beginner status to A-ranking.

The club meets at 7 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and at 9 a.m. Saturdays in the basement of the St. Mary’s Catholic School (the old Tileston) gymnasium at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Ann Street.

Six-week beginner courses are held periodically and cost $40. All equipment is provided. To find out when these classes are and for more information about the classes, e-mail  coach Gregory  Spahr at gregoryspahr@yahoo.com or go to capefearfencing.com/class.php

Also, a long-time member of the CFFA opened classes at Wilmington Athletic Club, at 2026 S. 16th St., in all three weapons.

That club is open to members and non-members of Wilmington Athletic Club.

Fencing Club is offered 7:30-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Adult introductory classes are offered from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and introductory classes for kids agess 10-14 are offered 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

To learn more about these classes, contact John Rea at 540-5808 or John.Rea@gnf.com
