How much money is given to informants by the Wilmington Police Department?

Shannan Bowen

The Wilmington Police Department has a fund it dips into to controlled buys or pay informants who make buys or offer tips.

Last fiscal year, from 2008 to 2009, there was $47,000 in the fund, said police spokeswoman Lucy Crockett. But, because of budget cuts, the amount was reduced this fiscal year to $37,000, she said.

The amount of money used from that fund depends on the situation. For example, purchasing a single ounce of powder cocaine, the minimum amount for the charge of trafficking cocaine, has a street value of $1,100 to $1,200, Crockett said.

Crockett said the police department also partners with federal, state and other local agencies, including inter-agency task forces, to combine resources in paying informants and making controlled buys.

I believe that the question posed was how much does a particular informant get payed per “bust.”

I would guess that it depends on how much dope is purchased, who from, and how good of a case is made. A kilo of cocaine from a multiple-felon/gang member probably pays better than a pound of marijuana from a clean record college kid.

“Informants” is a fancy way of saying, “dealing with the bad guys” These guys get to deal, use, transport, and make money on drugs as long as they keep giving police names to bust people. In other words, a 2 faced person who is your freind, sells you drugs, then bust you for those drugs. They also get a pay role pay on top of their free license to deal. This is illegal and against our constituional rights.

reading these answers makes me laugh!! Where did both of you come up with these guess’s?? i think both of you have watched to many movies. in fact what the law enforcement agencies do, is not supply people with drugs to cart around towns with freely as they wish and just stop and ask someone if they want to buy. The enviroment is controlled to the extreme, they want to make sure they have eyes and ears on the buyers and the “seller/informant”. They do compinsate the informants based on the credibility of the information provided and not on the amount that was recovered, like you say that a ” gangbanger with cocaine is worth more than a clean record college kid” totally not true. Do everybody a favor…… Research the article and provide accurate information…..
