Are there any bakeries that sell day-old items in Wilmington?

Judy Royal

If you want some baked treats without paying top-dollar, there is an alternative: day-old bakery items. Not only do they save money, but they’re a smart way to keep perfectly good food from being wasted.

Franklin Baking Co., which makes Sunbeam products, has a bakery thrift store with bread, snacks, chips and cookies, including some day-old items, at 3115 Wrightsville Ave., Wilmington [Map this]. Its hours are 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.

Most other bakeries have discounted day-old items, so call your favorite one to find out the details. La Gemma, 2323 S. 17th St., Wilmington [Map this], and Empire Deli & Bagels, 7419 Market St., Wilmington [Map this], are two bakeries that have been known to carry these items.

Ollie’s Coffee and Donuts also has good deals on day-old treats — particularly donuts and donut holes.

Hot Pink Cake Stand sells day old leftovers.. I think it depends on how well the cupcakes sell that day, but I went in once and they had several boxes of cupcakes (mini and regular sized) for only $10 a box.. there were at least 10 cupcakes in a box :)
