Is there any public land in New Hanover County where it is legal to ride dirt bikes?

Amy Hotz

There are no parks set aside in New Hanover County for motorized dirt bike riding. Your safest bet for going out for a ride is to find a landowner who will give you permission to use private property.

Often, people can be seen riding dirt bikes in the fine sand along River Road and Dow Road. This is private or government-owned property, however, and could lead to trespassing charges if done without permission.

“As for enforcement, people can be charged if the circumstances are right, but prior to being charged they have to be trespassing and given a letter from the property owners,”  said Deputy Charles G. Smith, public information officer for the  New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
