Who is responsible for maintaining street signs along private roads?

Judy Royal

Installation and maintenance of stop signs and other road safety signs along private roads are the responsibility of the subdivision’s homeowners association or the developer. Usually the developer is in charge of a new community until it is almost or fully built out and then turns things over to the HOA. Although the county assigns names to these streets, it has nothing to do with signage or any other aspect of them.

In these instances, it is up to homeowners to hold the HOA or developer responsible for missing or faded signs, said Greer Beaty, communications director for the N.C. Department of Transportation. No outside agency or organization has the power to impose any penalties for failure to comply unless the city or county where the subdivision is has an ordinance of regulation for such an issue. Local officials I spoke to were not aware of any of those types of ordinances in this area.

The best remedy would be for residents to try to work out the situation with the responsible group. If all else fails, they could always call on their local elected officials to help them find a solution.
