When will minor league baseball return to Wilmington?

Chuck Carree

Here is the pitch: Build a park and there is no shortage of suitors lining up to relocate to the Port City.

Unfortunately, no one’s stepping up to the plate right now.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo says it will only happen if the park is privately financed. Most minor league parks result from a combination of public and private funding.

And, when will that happen? The answer to that would take a crystal ball. One developer had explored the idea recently, but we’ve heard that idea has since been set aside.

Minor league baseball is a viable business only with corporate welfare. Here’s the scenario that is repeated across the country: Public builds ballpark, team moves in (but must sell beer to make a profit), when ballpark ages, team threatens to move out if renovations are not made to their specifications.
    Nice little racket!
