Where are good walking tours of the downtown Wilmington area?

John Staton

Ah, the walking tour. There’s no better way to find out about parts of downtown you don’t know about, and some of the guides are actually pretty fun and, in one case, legendary.

To wit: Bob Jenkins has been giving his vigorous Wilmington Adventure Walking Tours for nearly two decades, ever since he retired from an interior design business that was one of the first to set up shop in what was a seedy late 1970s Wilmington. Jenkins has got some years on him, but he’s spry, and if you’re not in decent shape you’ll have a hard time keeping up with him. Nobody knows more about downtown’s history, and how it relates to the present, than this guy. Tours are $10. They begin April 1 and continue through Nov. 1, by prearrangement only. For more information, call (910) 763-1785.

In recent years, so-called “haunted” tours have become more popular, and one of the most popular is the Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington, during which costumed guides will take you to sites where some creepy stuff has gone down. Times vary, so call ahead: (910) 794-1866. For the boozers among you there’s The Haunted Pub Crawl, which is like the Ghost Walk except you get to drink at some of the cooler bars in downtown Wilmington.

Bob Jenkins has not done the 2:00p.m. walking tour for 1 or 2 years. Only the 10:00a.m.

I understand Bob has retired and will not be doing the walking tours anymore. Check with Bob to see if he is doing tours by reservation.

The information about Bob Jenkins was updated today by David Morrison. Thank you for the suggestion.
