What agency/group can help me register to vote?

Judy Royal

We can get you where you need to go to make your voice heard. But first let’s share a few neat things you may not know about the voting process:

There are tons of statistics and data about local voting available online. For example, you can look up voter registration numbers at the N.C. Board of Elections Web site. You can also look up names of specific voters and find out if your family and friends voted. While you can’t find out who they voted for, it could be an effective way to shame them into performing one of their basic civic duties. Go to www.sboe.state.nc.us/VoterLookup.aspx

to check it out.

Residents may pick up applications for voter registration at public libraries, most town halls, the YMCA and YWCA, the Health Department, the Department of Social Services and state agencies including the Employment Security Commission. In some counties residents may pick up applications at country stores. Registration forms can also be downloaded from the state Board of Elections Web site, www.sboe.state.nc.us. Residents must process applications at their county’s Board of Elections office in person or by mail.

Residents may also register at the Division of Motor Vehicles when obtaining or renewing a driver’s license or changing an address. The department will forward the application to the Board of Elections.

To vote, residents must be 18 years old or older before the general election, a U.S. citizen, and a legal county resident who has registered 30 days before the election. Felons are not eligible to vote unless they have had their citizen rights restored.

The Board of Elections is at 230 Government Center Drive, Ste. 180, Wilmington, [Map this] and is open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. weekdays. Phone number is 798-7330. www.nhcgov.com
