What does New Hanover County plan to do with the old Blount Pre-K building?

What to do with several of New Hanover County Schools’ vacant or lightly used buildings was one part of the agenda during January 2011’s Board of Education Retreat.

While Blount Pre-K School at 3702 Princess Place Drive, Wilmington [Map this], has been vacant for the past two years, it had been used as a relocation school for Winter Park Elementary School during its renovations.

For now, all school district officials can tell us about the building is the district isn’t planning on selling it.

“There are not plans to get rid of it,” said Bill Hance, assistant superintendent for planning, technology and operations. “As far as exactly how it will be used next year, that’s still unknown at this point because the board hasn’t made a final decision.”

There are some possibilities being batted around — some of which county officials aren’t ready to disclose, Hance said, because “it’s part of the budget process so that’s a sensitive issue right now.”

But one option being looked at is leasing the building.

Hance said Blount’s future purpose will be one item of many to be discussed at the upcoming budget work session at 5 p.m. March 15, 2011, in the Professional Development Center of Mosley Performance Learning Center, 1805 S. 13th St., Wilmington [Map this].
