What is the history of the Seabreeze Gentlemen’s Club?

Seabreeze Gentleman's Cub on Elm Street, Tuesday, March 15, 2011.

The Seabreeze Gentlemen’s Club is described as an organization that “provides moral and financial support to the community,” in a New Hanover County Planning Department publication from 1988 titled, “Seabreeze: A Heritage Renewed.”

Seabreeze is a small community on the east side of U.S. 421 just north of Snow’s Cut. From the 1920s through the 1960s, Seabreeze was a prime vacation spot for African-Americans. More about the history of Seabreeze can be found in StarNews articles and in the answer to another MyReporter.com question.

But as for the history of the Seabreeze Gentlemen’s Club, 1112 Elm St., Wilmington [Map this], little is written. The club is mentioned in short StarNews articles about the fundraisers held there — mostly the selling of fish meals — in the 1980s, and it is also referred to in a master’s thesis titled “A Color Line in the Sand: African American Seaside Leisure in New Hanover County, North Carolina” by Jennifer Edwards. In the thesis it is called the Sea Breeze Gentleman’s Club. Other than that, not much more has been documented.

Anyone with information about the club’s history may post their information below as a comment or e-mail Cece.Nunn@StarNewsOnline.com..
