According to Jackie Margoles, manager of the Burgwin-Wright House, all that’s left of the house known as Castle Haynes are pottery shards. She believes they may have been taken down to a creek and used for target practice by Union soldiers after the overran the house.
The Burgwin/Wright connection goes as follows: John Burgwin, owner of the house on Market Street, married Margaret Haynes, daughter of Roger Haynes who owned the large house locals called a castle which stood in the community now called Castle Hayne.
