Is the public protected from exposure to taxi drivers who are sick?

David Morrison

No, the public is not protected in any way from a taxi driver’s illness. Taxi services are provided by private companies. Tracie Crisante from Kat’s Transportation said drivers are self-employed, which leaves discretion with the driver to work or not on a particular day. Therefore, if a passenger thinks a driver is ill, he or she can ride at his or her own risk, or request another driver.

Self-employed individuals are not required to carry health insurance; it is their choice to have the coverage they want. There are insurance policies for short-term disabilities caused by illnesses.

Drivers of vehicles for hire, such as taxicabs, are required to have valid licenses, carry liability insurance, and undergo a background check and a drug screening. Wilmington city ordinance Chapter 4 Article V: Vehicles for Hire outlines detailed specifications on the requirements and limitations of taxicabs.
