Is the land of Riverfront Park owned by the federal government?

Ken Little
StarNews

Riverfront Park is owned by the federal government and under Coast Guard jurisdiction, said Steve Harrell, city of Wilmington community services director.

Use of the park by the city if governed by a 20-year license granted by the Coast Guard. The license was issued on March 1, 1993, and is good through Feb. 28, 2013.

The city must work out a new agreement to retain use of the park land.

UPDATE: In January 2013, the city renewed its agreement with the Coast Guard to use the land through 2033, although it did not include the parking lot.
