Academic schedule changes may be in the works, but not until the 2012-13 school year at the earliest, University of North Carolina Wilmington spokeswoman Dana Fischetti said.
The current academic schedule followed at UNCW, particularly with regard to the timing of spring break, “was set many years ago and has continued to be followed since that time,” Fischetti said.
Under the schedule, spring break is set for the second week in March and at least two weeks prior to Easter.
“Recognizing that this break schedule does not coincide with those of its sister UNC institutions, UNCW’s Calendar Committee is looking into the possibility of syncing its schedule with the other colleges and universities in the future,” Fischetti said.
But the earliest that a schedule change could take place is for the 2012-13 academic year, because academic calendars for 2010-11 and 2011-12 have already been approved and published, Fischetti said.
“In a previous year, the university made an adjustment to the published academic calendar, which caused serious disruptions and confusion for many people who were not aware of the schedule change, despite UNCW’s extensive efforts to communicate it,” she said. “Waiting until the 2012-13 academic year will also provide adequate time for the Calendar Committee to solicit and consider ideas and input from students, faculty and staff as to the best schedule for UNCW to follow.”
