Why is it legal to drive across the median at the auto parts store on U.S. 74/76 at Delco?

It is not legal, and the N.C. Department of Transportation is taking steps to stop drivers from crossing the road at the median, Whiteville-based NCDOT District Engineer Drew Cox said.

“On a four-lane divided facility when you see these things it’s not legal,” Cox said. “They’re taking a shortcut and it doesn’t really save them that much time, but it exposes them to a hazard.”

The median in question is just over the Columbus County line.

“It’s not even a cross-over. It’s just a place folks have driven over enough where there’s no vegetation,” Cox said.

N.C. DOT is aware of the situation and will likely address it in January by cutting out and reshaping the median ditch to prevent illegal lane crossing.

“Folks will continue to go across there unless you physically constrain them,” Cox said. “If a patrolman sees someone doing that they will ticket them.”
