Where can I go to adopt a local family for the holidays? What charities are participating in this?

The Salvation Army has a list of 1,300 families who need help providing Christmas for this 2010 season, said Maj. Virginia Watts, who moved to Wilmington this year with her husband, Maj. Richard Watts.

Call the Salvation Army Church office at (910) 762-2070 and tell them you want to adopt a family.

The deadline to adopt a family is Friday, Dec. 10, 2010. But if you wait that long, shop fast – the presents will be given out on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 15-16, 2010.

Maj. Virginia Watts said people can request specific situations.

“We’ve had people say, ‘I want to adopt a family with a working mother and four children,’ ” she said.

Sometimes a generous family with say, two children will adopt a similar-size family so the kids can shop for their counterparts.

Each family on the list is qualified according to their income and needs. The number is about the same as last year, Watts said.

The Salvation Army is among the agencies that receive toys donated to the area Toys for Tots program.

People can also stop by the Angel Tree through Dec. 10, 2010, and pick an angel with the name and age of a child. The Angel Tree at Independence Mall is on the JCPenney wing, and Angel Trees are also placed at Walmarts, Cracker Barrels, banks and churches.

The Salvation Army’s Wilmington corps serves families in Brunswick, Bladen, Columbus, New Hanover and Pender counties.

If anyone knows of another agency where a family can be adopted for the holidays, contact Si Cantwell at (910) 343-2364 or si.cantwell@starnewsonline.com.

Since writing that, I have become aware of another opportunity. Here’s what I wrote for the newspaper:
Amigos Internacional Centro Latino is looking for “Santas” to help children whose families would like help buying presents.
The organization has already asked the parents for sizes of clothes and shoes, and for other gift ideas. The agency recommends spending about $25 on the gifts. Santas drop off the gifts by Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, and the families pick up the presents at a party on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010.
Or just give a donation and let Centro Latino do the shopping.
If you are interested or want more information, contact Nicholas Faherty, director of operations at Amigos Internacional Centro Latino, at 341-0007 or nicolas.ricolas@gmail.com.
