What’s the status of the Smith Creek Park project?

The bid opening for Smith Creek Park was held on Nov. 16, 2010, said Tara Duckworth, New Hanover County parks manager.

The construction contract will go before the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners for approval at a December 2010 meeting.

“Construction will begin once the contract is approved and signed by both parties,” Duckworth said.

Construction will take about six months. Smith Creek Park will encompass more than 90 acres and have “an environmental education emphasis,” Duckworth said.

It will include a 1.25-mile-long walking trail around the approximately 35-acre freshwater lake, water access for non-motorized water activities, a picnic shelter and restroom, a playground, and environmental education components. New Hanover County was awarded a $500,000 state Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant for park construction.

“The site is currently closed until construction is complete,” Duckworth said.

It is located off of Gordon Road near Interstate 40. The property was previously used by the N.C. Department of Transportation to mine sand that was used in the construction of I-40. The county later acquired the property and continued to sell sand mined from the site, putting the proceeds aside in anticipation of park development.
