Have New Hanover County residents been surveyed about the school district?

During the New Hanover County Schools superintendent search in May 2010, the N.C. School Boards Association coordinated a two-pronged survey of the community to see what it wanted to see in a new superintendent.

Many of the 164 respondents in the community survey wrote comments about what they also wanted changed in the school system and sometimes mentioned who they would like to see as the new head of schools. Some community members used the space to complain or voice their support of redistricting efforts, early intervention for children with learning disabilities or keeping academically gifted programs.

Also, there was a high participation rate in the separate survey of New Hanover County Schools employees.

School board members used the results of the survey to guide the rubric of qualifications for a new superintendent when they were wading through the new 40 applicants they received and ultimately chose Tim Markley.
