Malissa Talbert, spokeswoman for Wilmington’s city government, said city officials had no plans for a gym.
Andre’ Mallette, assistant county manager for New Hanover County, said the idea has been floated to move the wellness center for county employees from its existing location on Government Center Drive to an empty building the county owns at South Third and Wooster streets.
“We’ve talked about different things we might use that building for. We may ultimately sell it,” Mallette said. “Nothing has been decided.”
The county’s wellness center is where employees, their spouses and children ages 13 and older can be seen for minor, episodic care to save money on the health plan. It also is where employees can receive help in managing chronic diseases like diabetes.
Mallette said a workout gym has not been discussed for the space. He added that as of early November 2010, officials were still just exploring ideas for the building.
