Cape Fear Community College is currently constructing a parking garage facility at the intersection of North Mail Street and Hanover, said Ron Satterfield, planning manager in the city of Wilmington’s Development Services Department.

When completed, the Union Station Parking Deck behind the Schwartz Center will have over 1,000 parking spaces for CFCC students. The parking deck is scheduled to be completed by early 2012.

CFCC is also building a 210,000-square-foot student space and classroom at the corner of North Front and Red Cross streets, to be called the Union Station Building. Both projects were approved by the city in June.

Located at the corner of Front and Red Cross streets, “The building will enable CFCC to better serve local citizens by providing more classrooms for general college classes, expanded health care training labs, and a student services center,” according to the college’s website.

Shelco Inc. is the contractor working on the Union Station building. The company has multiple offices in North Carolina, but LS3P Associates LTD, the architecture firm, has been working mainly with the Raleigh office.

The project also includes plans to renovate the area around Union Station “to create an attractive and functional environment that will benefit students, employees, visitors and the general public,” according to CFCC officials.
